Some shocking news…

You might remember the post I published a few weeks ago, lamenting my indecision about what I’m going to do with my life post-Peace Corps. Well, in light of recent events, I’m going to have to hurry my ass up and pick something. Like, soon.

This is because the PC folks in Washington DC have decided to shut down Honduras as a post and send us home. Right now it is a very complicated issue and details are sketchy, I’ll write more when I know more. But the one thing I know for sure is, come mid-January I will be unemployed and on a plane for Cincinnati.  And despite my overwhelming desire to stay here in Honduras and see this to the end, there is nothing I can do to about the situation.

I am still in shock and havent really had time to process my options. I’m mostly just dreading the task that comes in two weeks when I get back in to my site in Honduras. How do I start packing all my stuff and saying a premature good-bye to a community I adore? Again.

This sucks so bad. I am heartbroken.

  1. David

Hi Sarah, my name is David, I’m an RPCV currently living in Atlanta. The Hondu-RPCV community is so bummed to hear about the recent decision to withdraw PCVs from Honduras. Are you still in Taulabe? I’ll be visiting your town for Navidad (my wife is Taulabeña), and I hope to meet you if you’re still around! I served in Santa Elena from ’06-’08 and in Siguatepeque ’08-’09. Could you send me an email with your whereabouts? And I’ve also been trying to contact the volunteer in Santa Elena, I think her name is Jackie? Could you pass along my contact info? egetter at gmail dot com. I was talking to a fellow RPCV at work today about setting up some sort of network where returning PCVs can post their resume’s and hopefully we could facilitate some sort of catalyst to get you guys into good “chamba” here stateside if desired. Holla back, I look forward to hopefully meeting you pronto. Great blog by the way, I really enjoy it!

  2. George

    Hola Sarah,
I’m George, an RPCV from Honduras (Group 75, 1984-1987) and a fellow Cincinnati resident. We have an active local chapter (CARV) of RPCVs including several among us who served in Honduras. Our web-site is: http://www.cincinnatirpca.org/
Cincinnati has many connections with Honduras from a former First Lady of Honduras, Mary Flake de Flores, a Finnytown native, to organizations such as Hombro a Hombro, and the Good Shepard Church project both of which do public health and or missionary work in Honduras.
It pains me to see PC pulling out because of security reasons. I married a young woman from my site and we were back in Honduras with our children visiting earlier this year, so I know how the country has changed and how dangerous it has become in certain areas.
Please look us up when you get to Cincy, CARV is a good group to get to know, and we do sometimes have employment leads for fellow RPCVs.

    Hasta pronto,

    Jorge

      Hi Jorge,
Wow thanks so much for commenting. I would love to join an RPCV network in Cincy, and perhaps continue to do volunteer work. I think that’s so cool that there is a Honduras connection, I will definitely get in touch with the group.
Glad to hear you make it back to Hondu on occasion. It really is a special place and I hope I have the chance when all this is said and done.
      Gracias para sus palabras.

      Jose –
We are really sad, and moreover we are confused because of the lack of details right now. However I would love to unload some furniture on you. I couldn’t think of a better recipient. We’ll let you know when we are both in town.
      Happy Holidays!
