I now officially have flight reservations to go back to the States for Christmas! Wahoo! I’ll be in DC for a quick visit to see my brother and then we will drive to Cincy where I will be for just over a week before I head back to Central America for New Years.
I am counting down the days (66) and I am just ecstatic. I don’t mean to wish away the time, because I am well aware that my final 7 months of Peace Corps are gonna fly by and blah blah blah. But I miss the US so much right now. And not just the usual laundry machine, driving a car and sushi. That’s long past. What I really want is to see my family and some of the people who have been supporting me endlessly throughout this past year, which has been vastly different, and in some ways more difficult, than my first year in Honduras.
It will only be a mere 9 days, but I am going to really enjoy not being a minority for a short while. I look forward to being among English speakers so I could perhaps go one day without being misunderstood, or walking away from a conversations thinking “I kinda wish I understood what just happened.” *
I still remember the last time I was in the states was last year for Christmas and after only 10 months in Hondu. At first it was a little weird being in the airport and hearing so much English all around me. But then I got a 32 oz. smoothie and a turkey club sandwich that was the size of my head and felt right at home again…
I am already fantasizing about accomplishing simple tasks with the assurance that they will be done with accuracy and in a timely manner – which is uniquely American. Such as a hair-cut for example. Also seeing an eye doctor or getting pictures printed comes to mind.
66 days and counting!! I’m giddy just thinking about it.
And now some pictures from my weekend hanging out with friends in Olancho. The parts that are deemed safe, that is. Venga si quiere. Salga si puede.

*20 months in this country and YES this still happens. We’ve all been there. No matter how well you think you know Spanish, there will always be that ONE GUY from the campo with no teeth who wants make chit-chat as you walk past his barn and despite your best efforts, there is just no way of interpreting the mess of sounds coming from his flapping gums. And though I haven’t a clue what he is saying, a smile and nod from me seems to satisfy him just fine. So if he’s happy with that, then so am I.

Would love to see you while in Ohio. We will be there for Christmas so hopefully we will cross paths!
Alyssa
Yes definitely! I will be at my parents house from the 22-28 (I think). Baby Grover will be getting pretty close I imagine. That’s so exciting!!!
We will cross into 3rd trimester right after Christmas. We are coming in the 23rd I believe so we will for sure have to catch up. You need to share the news with your mom since she is not on facebook and I do not have her email! =)
“…or walking away from a conversations thinking ‘I kinda wish I understood what just happened.’” I couldn’t have said it better myself! I was just thinking the other day, I would be more motivated to study Spanish if I felt like I would actually understand more.
