Independence Day Parade

I know its been a while since I have posted anything. In a nutshell my computer crashed the other day. Which generally makes any day the worst day of my life. But instead of allowing my self to do the usual panic, anxiety, angry at the whole world thing that I usually do when I have technology problems I decided to, very calmly, use a few computer-free days to take care of some stuff. I made some phone calls, cleaned my house, officially unpacked from my last cross-country weekend, etc. Plus I re-read Tina Fey’s  new book Bossypants for the second time (hilarious and I highly recommend it) and I got out and went on a jog for the first time in several weeks.

But now here I am, very calmly and not frustrated at all, painstakingly updating my blog and doing reasearch for a weeks worth of charlas in a crowded and kinda smelly internet cafe with very very slow bandwidth.

I´m fine, really.

So anyway. Last Thursday was the Honduran Day of Independence. September 15th is celebrated by five countries here in Central America for their independence from Spain in 1821.

The Honduran National crest, the Honduran National flag, and the Honduran national... peacock?

If you have been a long-time reader of my blog, then you would know that Honduras really like their parades. Not one holiday escapes without a desfile through town and children dressed up and signs and fireworks and all that.

In this particular parade (which I shall call the Parade of the Painted Children) each institution of learning had different groups dress up or play in bands to represent their school and different points of Honduran history. Just about every kindergarten, elementary and high school participated somehow. It was a very loud and colorful affair, a true display of Honduran and local pride and a reminder of why I am continually impressed and charmed by this little town.

Here’s a clip of one of the bands. I think the marching xylophones are pretty nifty.

One other note: I would like to point out that today marks both my 100th post AND my blog reaching 20,000 hits! Woo-hoo! Thanks to everyone who keeps reading and commenting!

Yours truly,
